Prior to my first pregnancy, I always thought of being that fab, posh momma every time I walked into the office – but the morning sickness had other plans for me. I hated the feeling of throwing up every 5 mins or so. And no, I didn’t only feel it in the morning, sometimes I even feel it at night before I sleep and I get less sleeping hours because of this = grumpy momma.

According to Dr. Gideon Koren, nausea and vomiting (NVP) is the most common medical condition in pregnancy– affecting an estimated 80% of pregnant woman. Mario Festin stated that Morning Sickness is usually experienced from the 4th – 16th week of pregnancy, but in some cases symptoms still appear up to the 20th week. With that, you can expect a rough ride during your first trimester, so better buckle up!

After my second child, I’ve found that 5 remedies work best for me whenever I feel nauseated, here they are:

Ginger Root and Powder

Anything with ginger on it – I hated eating ginger, I mean who does? Don’t get me wrong, I love it as a flavoring agent for my meals but eating small bits just makes me want to vomit.

Even with that, pregnancy has taught me to love ginger as this root has calming properties for your upset stomach. Quick tip: I would always bring a few pieces of ginger candies to work (doesn’t taste as bad as it sounds) You could find these at your local Chinese store.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar – I just mix 2-3 tablespoons of this to warm water and drink it right when I wake up and before going to bed. Apple cider vinegar has good antibacterial properties that are good in cleaning up your upset stomach. Side note: you might feel like throwing up the first few times you drink it, but after your 3rd/4th day you should be good.

Biscuit

Having more frequent but smaller portioned meals – This is especially relevant for those who don’t like having certain meals like breakfast. Before I got pregnant, I didn’t really like having breakfast. I would usually just fill my tumbler up with coffee and head to the office. And the thing was I would always get acid reflux – so just imagine the effect of this when coupled with morning sickness.

When our tummies are empty it starts to munch on our stomach lining – thus inducing nausea. So what my physician advised me to do was to have more frequent but smaller portioned meals. What I did was I always brought some crackers to work so I could munch on something whenever I felt hungry without overeating.

Try these out the next time you feel nauseated due to morning sickness, it worked for me and it might work for you too! But just a gentle reminder, it is always best to consult your physician on the best remedy as physiological properties differ from person to person.
