Breastfeeding can be hard work, mummies.

Your body is continuously working to produce milk for the baby. And it’s surprising how many times the little ones want to feed, considering that their stomachs are only the size of their little fist! And don’t even get me started on the sleepless nights and the chores that never seem to end. And don’t forget that you are still recovering from a major event – bringing a human into this world! No wonder new mums feel hungry all the time. And so, snacking and breastfeeding go hand in hand, so to speak.

Snacking between the meals is normal, even necessary. But, do remember that as a lactating mother, you also need to take care of your nutritional needs. Whatever you eat, it indirectly reaches your baby. Also, you want to eat healthy food that can give you the much required energy boost.

So, here are a few snacks that you can keep handy or get ready in a jiffy.

  1. Granola bars: High in protein and fiber, these are great to grab when the hunger pangs strike, but mealtime is hours away.

  2. Bananas: While fruits are always a great option to snack on, bananas win hands down when it comes to snacking on the go. You can keep a couple of bananas in your bag when you are out and about and eat this potassium-rich goodness literally anywhere. What’s more, it comes in its own unique packaging and you don’t even need to wash it before eating.

  3. Trail Mix: Some dried fruit, a few nuts, and some sunflower seeds thrown in. Voila! Your trail mix is ready to be stored in an airtight container. Keep it on a table near you while you nurse. This way, when the baby feeds, the mummy can eat too!

  4. Smoothies: You know how everybody insists that since you are feeding milk to the baby, you should have more milk too? After a while though, it can get tedious to drink plain milk. Why not throw in some fruits and nuts and whip up tall glass of smoothie? Looks great. Tastes better!

  5. Yogurt: When you are tired of the milk routine, try some yogurt for a calcium boost. You can have plain yogurt or add some berries and honey to make it extra delicious.

  6. Eggs: Eggs contain protein and zinc which are good for you and the baby too. And the best part is cooking eggs is probably the easiest cooking job on the planet. Boil them, scramble them, or just whip them and pour onto a frying pan and you have an omelet ready. A simple seasoning of salt and pepper and you are good to go.

  7. Breastfeeding cookies: Cookies are love. And when made with special ingredients such as wheat germ, flaxseed, and oats, they are the breastfeeding mum’s dream come true. You can buy these cookies or make some at home.

  8. Dark chocolate: This is for those times when you must have some cocoa goodness. Chocolate is known to be a natural happy-food and dark chocolate is full of antioxidants. We know how tempting it can be, but have it in moderation mummies! Also, try to combine some rich dark chocolate with strawberries and raspberries and you have a more filling snack at your disposal.

  9. Peanut butter: Peanut butter is the perfect option for your hunger cravings. Instead of reaching out for that bag of chips or something fried, have a spoonful of this yummy goodness. Spread on a toast or use it as a dip with apple and carrot slices.

  10. Celery: Looking for a nutritious snack that won’t add to your weight? Celery is the answer. Have a tasty dip to go with it such as protein-rich hummus or yummy mozzarella cheese.

So mummies, snack on and keep hunger at bay! Happy breastfeeding!
