As mums, we go to any lengths to ensure our babies grow up healthy. But sometimes, no matter how hard you try, babies tend to fall sick often. Some babies don’t eat well, don’t sleep well, and we are left wondering what we can do better.

We came to know that Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) baby massage can ensure better immunity and health for babies. We decided to find out.

We dropped by at the Thomson Chinese Medicine Clinic in Singapore, to see how to do a TCM baby massage and understand how it is different from the regular baby massage.

As we entered the clinic, the front reception greeted us with warm smiles. We met Ms. Zhou Jing, a Physician from Thomson Chinese Medicine, and spoke to her at length about how TCM massage works. She gave some helpful information and also demonstrated how she does a TCM Baby Massage.

As you can see from the video below, it is an easy technique that you can follow for your baby.

Below is an excerpt from the interview with Ms. Zhou Jing on TCM massage and its benefits for babies.

1. Hi Zhou Jing, what are the benefits of a TCM baby massage?

TCM baby massage is useful in helping with a range of common conditions from colic, indigestion, and constipation, to respiratory issues like sinus and cough. It can help to strengthen the baby’s constitution and boost their immunity, ensuring that the baby grows healthy and stays well.

2. What is a good age to give a TCM baby massage?

Baby massage would be suitable for children from as early as 6 months old to about 7-8 years old. However, as children grow older, their skin becomes less sensitive and the effects of the massage may be less pronounced.

3. Do you have other tips on baby massage? Are there any cues from the baby that need to be followed?

Massage can be done daily, need not follow any special cues.

4. Is there any special oil we can use?

For TCM massage, usually, we use Hua Shi Fen (Talcum powder) to reduce friction on the baby’s skin during massage. For tummy rubs, we will use Ru Yi Oil as it relieves the baby of stomach wind and colic. Olive oil or Coconut oil works fine too as they are gentle on a baby’s skin.

5. What is the best time of the day to massage the baby?

A massage before bedtime at night is the best as it can soothe the baby’s stomach and help them to have a good night’s sleep.

6. How can TCM help babies in their health and wellness?

TCM baby massage helps to regulate baby’s Qi and blood flow, alleviate common ailments that they may encounter, and boost their overall immunity and wellbeing. In addition, TCM herbal powder may also be administered externally for babies to further help them recover from illnesses and promote their long-term wellbeing.
